I think the most remarkable thing about this story is that 2875 men and women of the guard were deployed in Iraq…and the exact same number of them came home.
Sure, violence in Iraq has tempered somewhat, but we just don’t hear a lot about the soldiers there or the dangers they face while serving.
Today, they were honored with a parade through downtown Trenton. These guardsmen were shipped out last September and returned just these last two weeks. The sense of sacrifice here is nothing short of extraordinary.
This was the Largest deployment for New Jersey since World War II and the soldiers I spoke with today were candid about their experience.
They said it was both good and bad, acknowledging the difficulties of being away from their families. Difficult indeed.
